Minor Empires - Self Titled
Minor Empires self is a hard rock band hailing from the country of Spain, and their self-titled debut album was released in March of this year (2014). The music on the album is very melodic, even when they are tearing through a scorcher of a track, and the vocals are extraordinary.
With so much great music included on this disc, it's hard to pinpoint a favorite track. The entire album is so well written and expertly played. The lead cut, "The Physics of Light" is a brief intro to get your pumped and ready for the melodic hard rock fest that is about to follow. It segues into the track "Targets", a song that deserves to be burning up any hard rock chart. I take an almost Porcupine Tree kind of vibe away from this song, and the drums really drive this tune into the stratosphere.
"Empty Rooms" is another melodic rocker, with a chorus that will stay with you for days. Some great guitar work on this one, and the rhythm section will have your feet tapping in no time. "The Story of Timothy Treadwell" coems in a bit quiet before picking up momentum, and is a very good track. The vocals really shine on this song, and the guitars are just perfect, together they create an amazing song.
"Truth Seeker" is my favorite song on the album, and one of the best songs I've had the pleasure of hearing in a long time. This tune has everything that I like in a good song, a driving rhythm section, melodic and crunchy guitars, and powerful vocals.
"Linsey" threw me for a loop as it is quite a different track for this album, more of a groove oriented tune, but an amazing track just the same. Some very cool instrumental work going on this song. It's always cool to see a band stretch out and do something a bit different from the rest of their material. "Echoes From Nowhere" is a very brief instrumental track, but it creates such an amazing atmosphere, and is possibly one of the most beautiful things I've heard in a long while. From there we go into "Numbers", and this song is a hard rocker that reminds me of Tool at times. As always, great guitars, incredible vocals, and the bass and drums are damned near perfect here.
"Drones" is another great track in a flawless album, with a killer rhythm section, and a guest vocalist, making this song another standout on the disc. "The Season" closes out the album in fine fashion, with another melodic rocker. Once again, you got beautiful music that knows how to breathe and comes out pounding at times, but is also drenched with emotion, even in the louder sections of the song. Add in some beautiful vocals and you have the perfect ending to an album that is sure to make many top ten lists for the year!
